Special Feature: Geotags and their use for Esperanto websites

[Legu tiun ĉi paĝon esperante]

Why should my website use geotags?

Webmasters who use geotags want their website to be associated with their local area.

This has the following benefits for Esperanto websites:

  • Users of other websites in your local community will discover your website and hopefully a number of them will visit to learn more about the International Language.
  • Users of your website can discover other websites in your locality, if you include a Geourl button like the one on the left-hand side of this page.
  • Improved listing in the major search engines, because they use geourl.org results.

Below is a typical result from http://geourl.org/:

Usually you only need to alter the main page of your website. However, if you have a webpage promoting an event in another place, you can also add a geotag to the page advertising that event. For example, the following results include a page about a meeting in Preston:

What is a geotag?

Geotags are meta-tags which are placed in the <head> of a web page. They are invisible to normal users of the website. Geotags contain a latitude and longitude related to the website. This could be the geographic location of the website's owner, or of the subject of the webpage.

A typical geotag is as follows:

<meta name="ICBM" content="53.673,-2.9581">
<meta name="DC.title" content="South Lancashire Esperanto Group: Main Page">

In the above, 53.673 is the latitude and -2.9581 is the longitude (53.673 degrees north of the equator, 2.9581 degrees west (of Greenwich, London)). The DC.title line gives the title of the webpage as it should appear in geourl.org search listings.

Several search engines such as http://geourl.org/ will read this information and use it when returning search results. Two other search engines are http://geourl.info/ and http://a2b.cc/.

OK, so what do I do next?

Inform geourl.org about your page by means of their form at http://geourl.org/ping/ . If your changes are correct, your page will now appear in their search results!
