10 years of the South Lancashire Esperanto Group!
In October 1995, a group of esperantists from Chorley, Southport and Leyland met and decided to found an Esperanto Group. Thus, the South Lancashire Esperanto Group was created.
The creation of our group was also a re-birth of Esperanto in our area, because earlier groups existed in Preston (1908 - chairman Mr A.T.Bott MA) and Southport (1906 - chairman The Rev L.Ashby).
Since 1995, the group has grown and we are among the most active groups in the UK today.
To celebrate this important anniversary, we held a special meeting in Southport on Saturday October 22. All four founder members of our group were present - Mr Ray NEWMAN (who convened the first meeting in Leyland and was its first Chair), Mr Jim VOIELS (current Chair/Secretary), Mrs Vivienne ISHERWOOD (current Vice Chair) and Mr Steven HODSON (former Treasurer).
